The Stick Struggle is Real: My Journey to the Grant Collins Signature

October 20, 20242 min read

Have you ever blamed a technique hurdle on the wrong drumstick?  Raises hand sheepishly Yeah, me too. For years, I chased the mythical "perfect stick" that would magically unlock my drumming woes. But the truth, as always, was far less glamorous – it was all about practice.

The Quest for the Perfect Fit

Throughout my career, I've experimented with countless drumsticks. Whenever a new technique proved elusive, I'd convince myself the culprit was a faulty stick, not my own technique. This endless search led me down a rabbit hole of different brands, weights, and tips. It wasn't until I embraced dedicated practice that I truly began to improve.

The Birth of a Signature Stick

However, after decades of drumming, I can confidently say I've found a stick that truly complements my style: the Vic Firth Grant Collins signature model. Now, before you roll your eyes and think it's just shameless self-promotion, hear me out! Here's why this stick became an extension of myself:

The Power of Size:

I'm a firm believer in the power of bigger sticks. They encourage a looser grip, reducing tension and fatigue. My signature stick is larger than a traditional 2B, but crafted from lightweight maple, offering the weight of a 5A. This perfect balance allows for both power and finesse.

The All-Rounder Tip:

The round tip is another key feature. It delivers consistent sound across the entire kit, regardless of the angle I strike. This is essential for my dynamic playing style, ensuring a clear and articulate sound whether I'm laying down thunderous beats or delicate ghost notes.

Technique Over Brand:

While I love my signature stick, the crucial takeaway is this: the best stick is the one that works for you. Experiment with different brands, weights, and tips to find what complements your grip, technique, and playing style.

A Word on Adjustment:

Moving from a smaller to a larger stick can feel awkward initially. Don't give up! Give yourself time to adjust. After a few dedicated practice sessions, you'll find your balance and unlock the potential of your new stick.

The Search Never Ends

The quest for the perfect drumstick is a personal journey. There's no magic bullet, but with dedicated practice and a willingness to experiment, you'll find a stick that becomes a seamless extension of your drumming soul.
