The All-Encompassing Arsenal: Why I Love My Monster Drum Set

The All-Encompassing Arsenal: Why I Love My Monster Drum Set

September 15, 20242 min read

What's your dream drum kit that surrounds you? For me, having played on countless drum sets throughout my career, there's one setup that truly ignites my creative fire: the large solo drum set.

A Symphony of Shells and Cymbals

It's not about having the biggest kit for the sake of it. It's about having an arsenal of tonal possibilities at my fingertips. My large setup boasts a variety of drums and cymbals, each with its unique voice, allowing me to tackle any musical style imaginable. From deep, booming bass drums to shimmering splashes and everything in between, this kit is a sonic playground.

Inspired by the Masters

I've always been captivated by the visual spectacle of large drum sets. Watching drumming legends like Terry Bozzio, Neil Peart or Danny Carey command these sprawling setups instilled a sense of awe and a desire to explore those creative possibilities myself.

More Than Just Size:

Don't get me wrong, I have a deep appreciation for the power and focus a smaller kit demands. I've played countless gigs with a stripped-down four-piece setup, and it's an incredibly rewarding experience.

The Creative Canvas

The allure of the large kit lies in its versatility. It's like having a vast sonic palette at my disposal. I can craft dynamic and intricate grooves, explore complex polyrhythms, and unleash thunderous fills – all within the same setup. This creative freedom fuels my passion and allows me to truly express myself behind the kit.

The Gigantic Gig Trade-Off

Now, let's address the elephant in the room (or rather, the elephant-sized drum set in the truck): logistics. Yes, setting up and breaking down a large kit can be a workout. But for me, the joy of playing it outweighs the effort. And on tours, thankfully, I have a dedicated crew to handle the heavy lifting.

The Love of the Lug

However, there's something undeniably satisfying about lugging in that massive kit and setting it up myself. It's a labor of love, a commitment to the music I'm about to create. And let's be honest, five extra drums aren't that much more work in the grand scheme of things!

The Dream is Yours to Define

Ultimately, the perfect drum set is a personal preference. It's about the sound, the feel, and the setup that ignites your creative spark. So, what's your dream drum throne and the kit that surrounds you?
